ABOUT

Ariana Papademetropoulos is a Los Angeles-based painter who describes the city as “one of the only places that allows you to dream.” This sentiment is central to her work, which draws from the surrealist tradition—particularly the contributions of Dorothea Tanning and Remedios Varo—to explore the possibilities of the imagination on canvas.

Papademetropoulos’ paintings are alive with detail and symbolism, capturing both the beauty of nature and the imagination’s ability to shape it. Recurring elements—mirrors, water, snails, architectural fragments—function as portals to otherworldly dimensions. The unicorns at the center of her work evoke both magic and yearning, challenging ideas of innocence and escapism. These creatures, which serve as the artist’s alter-ego and main character, embody contradictions: they are both real and imagined, familiar yet strange. They guide viewers through dreamlike scenes where the natural and the supernatural sit side by side.

Though rooted in surrealism, Papademetropoulos’ art reflects the anxieties of today’s world. Oscillating between beauty and doom, solace and melancholy, her canvases capture the fragility of the now—when nothing is certain and an ominous feeling looms.
